What is FEES?

The Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, (FEES), is a low cost alternative to MBSS.

FEES uses a thin endoscope that is positioned through your nasal cavity that gives us a birds-eye view of your throat while you are swallowing.  It is used to assess people who have difficulty swallowing, which is called dysphagia.

FEES provides an accurate assessment of swallowing which enables the most appropriate diet recommendations for patients.

Accuracy
MBSS
Very expensive. Can cost up to $3000/study
Requires coordination with transportation, radiology, radiology suite, speech therapist, SNF staff, & other scheduling conflicts
Radiation exposure limits time allowed to perform test
Doesn't allow for the assessment of soft tissue and airway patency (an integral component of swallowing function)
Taste of barium and fatigue from transport may affect patient performance. Some patients will not be suitable due to physical limitations or restrictions
FEES
Fraction of the cost. One fixed cost. No hidden fees/charges.
We come to you! We schedule at your convenience

No radiation exposure required for evaluation
Allows for assessment of soft tissue and airway patency
Easily performed on obese or medically fragile patients in their own room. Can even be performed on patients with mechanical ventilation
Comfort

"A non-instrumental assessment may provide sufficient information for a clinician to diagnose oral dysphagia; however, aspiration and other physiologic problems in the pharyngeal phase can only be directly observed via instrumental assessments"

-ASHA: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
